Ford Capri image

[edit]

I notice you have placed an image at Ford Capri which is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License. It is poorly indicated on the Wikipedia help pages, but noncommercial-only images are deprecated here and will probably be removed in future. Would you consider changing to a license that does not have the noncommercial clause? —Morven 12:36, Sep 7, 2004 (UTC)

Hi - I hope you don't mind that I replaced the photo you uploaded to the "Methods of power" section. If you can find (or shoot) a photo showing the boiler of the locomotive, it would be more appropriate in that section. It's still an excellent image on the "Live steam" page, showing the contrast to the large 2-10-0. Could you put the scale of the Mamod engine into your photo caption, to point out the size difference - one might not realize it from the photos alone.

I also replaced the image on the Scale model page with something that is more appropriate - I think you must agree the Mamod is more a toy than a real scale model. --Janke | Talk 17:14, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr Tag linking

[edit]

Hello. I finally rediscovered my feature request after losing it for 2 months (very careless of me). Does your Flickr template exist? Nobody else contributed to that discussion. I suppose I'm nervous about what it might unleash. Ie, increasing the likelihood of Flickr tag spamming, perhaps. I'd be grateful if you'd let me know about the template on my talk page (as my Watchlist is so long I shall lose you if you reply here). Regards, --bodnotbod 02:47, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    • Hmmm, doesn't seem to work very well on Ice cream, give it a try. Assuming the problem is that the pagename is more than one word, I think ideally I'd like to see it so that each word had a + sign instead of a space between words when it's transformed into the URL. I suspect something like that is going to be a lot harder to achieve. Let me know if the advice is to limit the template to one-word topics. Best wishes, --bodnotbod 20:01, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, it really is broken

[edit]

From here

When I try, it says 'the page cannot be displayed'. To be honest, I was going to make a List of fictional moles. I can only think of three, and one I'm not really sure it counts. Maybe it better be List of fictional moles and other borrowing mammals. AAAAAADDDR 11:22, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

If you read your comments above, you will notice both titles are red (or have a red question mark). Click the title of the page you want to create, and you will see a message that "Wikipedia does not yet have a page called List of fictional moles". Any text you enter in the box below will form the new page when you click the Save button. You could take a look at List of fictional rabbits to give you some ideas for page layouts, section headings, etc. Don't worry if you can only think of three fictional moles - others will soon add more if there are any. -=# Amos E Wolfe talk #=- 15:53, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

I know all that, but it really does say 'this page cannot be displayed', as in, the page is broken., there's a 404 etc. And now my row of links at the top, with my name and stuff, runs away and hides under the Wikipedia logo when I try and click it. Kid Apathy 18:56, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Rail-97651-amoswolfe.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rail-97651-amoswolfe.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:08, 8 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia 00:08, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you haven't quite read the first para: "Orton Mere is a station[...]and several moorings for boats navigating the River Nene" David Underdown 14:34, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The point is it is not just an NVR station, as anyone who has spent any time in the city would know. How many railway stations do you know that have "several moorings for boats navigating the River Nene" etc. The station is only one part of Orton Mere. Please revert the move as per my original request, as there has obviously been no discussion/ consensus reached for it. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Pete-Atkin-Album-Lakeside-Sessions.jpg)

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:Pete-Atkin-Album-Lakeside-Sessions.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Dear AmosWolfe.

[edit]

Thanks for your contribution to the page List of Great Central Railway locomotives earlier on today, it looks better than my own 48305 picture by far. I publish this because I will of course, as the possibly page's biggest contributer continue adding more information on the relevant subject in question, but it would be nice to replace any of my stock photos if the quality is superior to them. The images of D4067, 4141, 63601, 30777, 78019 and several of the LNER Teaks are worth replacing because when I took them they were either rushed from a carriage window or else taken with huge amount of sunlight clearly shown within them, plus the picture of 70013 doesn't always seem to "work" due to the wherabouts of the photo's taking being away from the railway itself, so see what you can find if possible. Yours sincerly. —   DuchessofSutherland (t/c) 20:34, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why the renaming? I've had a quick click around of relevant links, and the only place I can see 'Delapré' rather than 'Delapre' is in the image banner on http://www.delapreabbey.org/. File permission problem with File:Dr-busker-amoswolfe.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Dr-busker-amoswolfe.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. File source problem with File:Nlr-tjloco-amoswolfe.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Nlr-tjloco-amoswolfe.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. File permission problem with File:Nlr-tjloco-amoswolfe.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Nlr-tjloco-amoswolfe.jpg.

File source problem with File:Rail-reedhamswingbridge-amoswolfe.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Rail-reedhamswingbridge-amoswolfe.jpg.

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:45, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Railway icons

[edit]

[3] What's going on? Is this an official move, or some sort of joke? I obviously missed the discussion. I imagine hundreds of broken templates now.. eg Template:York Junction, Leeds and Selby Railway, 1840 Template:Hull & Barnsley Railway Template:Cawood, Wistow and Selby Light Railway are all bust, I had these on watchlist - no mention.

Can't some bot do this task, should I ask about this?Sf5xeplus (talk) 19:58, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Trains#Railway_icons Sf5xeplus (talk) 20:07, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. If a bot has been given the task should the icons not be changed manually at all? I wonder if the bot will come along and swap the ones you swapped...
I think the best thing to to would be ask the bot owner if it's still working.Sf5xeplus (talk) 11:32, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you have been fixing alphabetically - when a bot can be got working it can start from where you left off.Sf5xeplus (talk) 12:10, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More

[edit]

See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Trains#List_of_articles_already_fixed I've assumed you've fixed all the articles up to "Bristol", starting at "aaa" - is this correct.?

Template:Romford to Upminster Line

[edit]

Amos,

I'm no expert on the line diagram templates, but for some reason your edits today to Template:Romford to Upminster Line broke the presentation of the main article Romford to Upminster Line. The problem was raised at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains#Someone with coding skills, and as a temporary solution I reverted your changes. Perhaps you can fathom out what went wrong?

CONT icons on waterway maps

[edit]

Thanks for all your work putting CONT icons on waterway maps. I have had to revert a couple, however, as they imply a continuation where there is not one. The two branches on Trinity Broads do not go anywhere, and the Southwold Harbour railway branch stops at the harbour, rather than continuing into the North Sea. Bob1960evens (talk) 18:35, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please check that waterways actually continue somewhere before just adding CONT symbols on to the end of everything. I have just had to delete quite a lot from the Cambridgeshire lodes. Bob1960evens (talk) 23:55, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have just found the Template:River Thurne map. What evidence and sources do you have for a continuation of Martham Staithe beyond what was originally shown, please? My OS maps show it as a short stub as it was originally drawn. In some cases it has taken considerable poring over maps and books to get the details right, and now I suspect I might need to check lots of maps for inaccuracies caused by the addition of CONT symbols where there is no evidence that the waterway continues. Bob1960evens (talk) 23:01, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I have just removed a CONT icon from Template:Aberdare Canal map, since there is no evidence that it ever continued beyond its terminus. Bob1960evens (talk) 10:24, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 21:00, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Template:South London Line requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it must be substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Bulwersator (talk) 15:54, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Dr. Busker is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dr. Busker (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The word "radial" used in regard to steam valves

[edit]

Hi Amos, I am interested in the varying uses of the word "radial" in regard to steam valves. Many texts say Walchaerts is a radial valve gear. Are they wrong and why?

The Engineer from 1889 mentions the Herman Winters' Radial and rotary valve fitted to the Stevens long toe cutoff.

I am trying to organize the "valve gear" article section names.

I don't see how the Hackworth gear works. I see the connecting rod connected to the slide. Is the eccentric on the other side of the loco? Where is there a drawing of the gear?

Why was "Radial valvegear" article redirected to the "valve gear" article without a rigorous definition of the "radial" name as used in Wikipedia? Douglas Nelson Turner (talk) 02:45, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Red light running

[edit]

You recently nominated the article Red light running for merge. I'm in agreement with the basic idea. The article author has removed the merge template and continues to make good faith(?) edits that ultimately aren't making the article any better. He (presumably a "he" given the name) has been given a Twinkle welcome, but has not made any edits to name space or talk space -- his or any article's -- and it is unclear if he is even aware of the proper way to object to a proposed page merge. Also, I should mention that he did not remove the merge tag from Traffic light#Legal implications. At this point, I'm tempted to use the study itself, along with secondary sources to write a paragraph or so for the appropriate section of the Traffic light article, and then nominate Red light running for deletion. Is this too bitey? Is there a better way to handle this situation? (I'll watch here for a reply.)  Etamni | ✉  04:22, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello AmosWolfe, Very belatedly in answer to your question on the George Street tram stop talk page... yes that is George St. but the livery is the old red / white and not the current green etc. one. Also (if you are at all interested) to my mind the stop s-box at the bottom of the page is the wrong way round. George St. is the stop after East Croydon on all routes and the one before Church Street. But I am not at all familiar with the way these boxes are conventionally written, & it can be read as correct in that it precedes Church St. (!) Thanks. VTA Light Rail

[edit]

I'm unfamiliar with the template options for the Transit project. If there is such granularity in the options, its a Light Rail system, not Subway. There are few bits that are underground for a number of yards, but its primarily street level. These used blue icons for two reasons:

  1. The convention for Bus Rapid Transit seems to be to consider them in the same category as light rail, etc.;
  2. They match the header colour (often applied to heavy rail rapid transit line diagrams).

Thank you for the welcome! I'm not affiliated with the website drivetribe.com, I just named my account this because creating the wiki page was the first thing I planned to do. I attempted to make the page with a neutral point of view following Wikipedia policy. DriveTriber (talk) 04:09, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Vircator band

[edit]

Thanks for your input! I was reading trough disambiguation pages and more, meanwhyle I tried to make an article, my mistake. I confess I'm a little lost but I'll take my time and come back with an article about vircator as it should be. The page should be deleted as it is now it won't comply. Route knowledge - Rail: movement

[edit]

So without any sort of discussion you moved the page 'for consistency'.... You should appreciate that this was not an arbitrary title: this is not a UK only page. I deliberately chose the expression RAIL because railway is European terminology and railroad is American (amongst others). Every railway/railroad in the world has route knowldege, and my intention is to have an international page where people from other countries are encouraged to contribute their information. And that's not going to happen if it has a UK only title. Dr Sludge (talk) 11:58, 16 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AmosWolfe. It has been over six months since you last edited your Articles for Creation draft article submission, "Heritage Railway connections to the National Rail network".

In accordance with our policy that Articles for Creation is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 20:13, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:Maps-sodor-railways-amoswolfe.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned map.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 02:59, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I use an automated tool to help fight vandalism and fix other issues on Wikipedia. At the time I added the notice, an IP user had made an edit to the article which had changed it into Spanish (this has now been reverted). As part of the tool's options, it can add a message on the talk page of the user who created the article in the first place. It looks like the IP user reverted their own edit shortly afterwards. -=# Amos E Wolfe talk #=- 07:44, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Mitcheldean, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Coleford (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
